2/14/05 Breaking News: It appears that the date stamp on the back of the aerial photo is incorrect, even though it came from the Chamber of Commerce. The published history of The Patriot News indicates that they moved into their (then) new building at 812 Market Street in July 1953. It does not appear in the photo! So the photo, allowing for construction time, is likely pre-mid-1952. Dan Cupper recalls the Market Street Delivery coexisting with the new Patriot building for some time (it is a parking lot today).

Downtown side, on siding right next to HARRIS tower. Have 1929 photo showing box cars spotted there.
The 1930 Polk City directory places (p. 453) Montgomery & Co. at "627 Walnut Street" and indicates this is a warehouse for "storage, drayage, transfer and distribution." |

Was this a precursor to one of the above companies? Possibly the building labeled Farm Equip. Warehouse next to the Pa. State Bureau of Publication building. If not, then irrelevant. |

Cameron Street side. Elec. Supplies Warehouse on later Sanborn map, near Pa. State Bureau of Publication building. (PP&L has three sidings - 9, 10, 11 - in this area on the 1945 CT1000. There is no way to really know which is which. In the 1923 CT1000 this was the Hbg. Light & Power Co. with sidings numbered 1 & 3. For purposes here, the siding number was randomly selected and assigned to a specific location.) |

Should be noted that the later Sanborn map shows two warehouses with rail access just west of the Pa. State Bureau of Publication building. The first may have been used by International Harvester, as it is labeled Farm Equip. The other is labeled Warehouse Elec. Supplies. The latter may have been part of the PP&L plant.
Later Sanborn map of south side of right of way. HARRIS tower is just out of view to upper right. Upper right shows building labeled "Home Appliances". This would be the Montgomery & Co. location.
