H. M. Kelley & Co. |
Was this a precursor to another company? If not, then irrelevant.
The 1930 Polk City directory places (p. 365) H. M. Kelley & Co. Co. at "State sw cor 10th" dealing in "coal and wood". |
| Hbg. Steel Corp. No. 2 |
Hbg. Pipe & Pipe Bending co. |
Cameron Street side. Trestle, noted on Sanborn maps as Harrisburg Steel. Partially remains; I have photos. This trestle appears in the background of a photo on page 100 of Pennsy Diesel Years 6 -- there appears to be a four-bay hopper, a covered hopper, and a bxo car spotted on the trestle. The very end of the trestle can be viewed in the background of a shot on page 46 of Pennsy Steam Years 1. Another photo appears on page 62 of Pennsy Steam Years 2 and provides a nice backdrop of the Harrisburg Steel sign with a Reading covered hopper on the trestle. |

Downtown side. I believe this to be the area with the gantry, between the main lines and the Swift plant. |

Swift & Co., R. R. Rhoads, F. L. Koenig, T. F. Towsen, United Ice & Coal Co. No. 4 and Central Construction & Supply Co. No. 2 |
Downtown side.
And where were the stock pens for the Swift plant? I suspect that they might be what the Sanborn map (below) labels as "Tankage"... due to its proximity to the slaughterhouse portion of the plant and rail access. Ken Britton recalls them being right along 7th Street, but doesn't know for sure.
The Swift plant shows a "coal pile" on the 1956 Sanborn. How was the coal delivered... truck, rail? Was there a coal dump underneath one of the spurs?
United Ice & Coal was gone by 1954. The 1949 Polk city directory lists other locations, but none in this area.
1929 Sanborn shows Milleisens Coal & Wood Yard, obviously the predecessor to United Ice & Coal, occupying 817-931 N. 7th Street. Central Contruction & Supply Co. occupies the area of 943 N. 7th Street. |

While connection was at this location, the siding extended (railroad) west to 11127 North 7th Street. Business was actually named Commonwealth Junk Co., owned by Simon Michlovitz. |

1949-ish Sanborn map of the railroad north side of the area.

Below is a the 1949-ish Sanborn map of the block directly railroad west side of the current block. The valuation map shows one siding from this switching area heading directly to, but dead ending at, Herr Street (which is an underpass). When you visit the site it is obvious that this track rose up a grade onto a trestle. The piers extend not only to the edge of Herr Street, but there is still one pier on the other side! (photo) It is obvious that a track once went across Herr Street. The 1929 Sanborn reveals that it was actually the lead to the coal wharf at the one steam locomotive facility a few blocks west. The locomotive facility would have been removed when the new facility was built off in the 1930's. Mystery solved! click on image to view larger version in new window
