Cabin cars were modified for express service in three groups and information on cars were modified for express service in three groups and information on these cars can be summarized as follows:
1. Total of 45 cars (all class N5) modified late 1926/early 1927.Car Nos. 4980 - 5024. By 1937, all but seven of these cars were renumbered with their original freight equipment numbers and reassigned to freight service.The seven which remained went to Penn Central (Nos. 5001/10/11/12/13/15/18).
2. Total of 17 cars (15 N5; 1 N5b; 1 N5c) modified mid- to late-1960.Cars Nos.as follows:
N5 Nos. 5002/3/5/6/7/8/9/14/16/17/19/21/22/23/24
N5b No. 5004
N5c No. 5020
Note that these cars all re-used numbers in the 5000 series which had been vacated when the original cars were reassigned to freight service.Thus, with the seven N5's still in express service, there was a total of 24 cars, numbered 5001 - 5024.
3. Total of 10 cars (5 N5; 3 N5b; 2 N5c) modified mid-1965.These were numbered in a new series 5025 - 5034 as follows:
N5 Nos. 5025/26/27/28/39.
N5b Nos. 5030/31/32
N5c Nos. 5033/34
