During WWII, the PRR converted 580 GR gondolas into FGR flat cars, 472419-472998, and 520 GRA gondolas into FGRA flat cars, 470899-471418, to meet the urgent demand to haul M4 Sherman tanks. The conversions consisted of removing the sides and adding stake pockets. By 1955, less than 50 remained. They all seemed to retain their 2D-F8 trucks. Many were transferred to MoW service.
