The cars used for the protection of the Boston connection were varied during the first half of the 1950s.
Randy Hammill, a New Haven Modeler (web site) to who I was introducted to via FaceBook, provided some very useful information on New Haven-PRR interchange service via New Haven documentation.
Randall indicates that from 1948 until the grey pool scheme was applied in the mid-1950s, BOK TOWER, BRESLIN TOWER and VICTORIA TOWER were painted in the PRR tuscan red scheme...
September 1950 - Randall indicates that service was protected by JENNINGS, KEYSTONE BANKS, OAKS BAY, and PENTON, all PRR-owned.
September 1952 - Per PRR Makeup of Trains, the cars went west on train 37, The Iron City Express, as follows:
- SL 12Rmt-2SBR-3DBR -- From NH 189 at NY.
- SL 12-1 -- From NH 189 at NY. PRR 12-1's STEINERS, RUFFSDALE and SUTTON were assigned to this train, but there were two other 12-1 cars so it is unknown if these cars fulfilled this slot.
- SL 8Sec-Lge-Buff -- From NH 189 at NY.
April 1953 - Per PRR Makeup of Trains, the cars went west on train 61, The Pittsburgher, as follows:
- SL 12Rmt-2SBR-3DBR -- From NH 189 at NY.
- SL 12-1 -- From NH 189 at NY. PRR 12-1's STEINERS, RUFFSDALE and SUTTON were assigned to this train, but there were two other 12-1 cars so it is unknown if these cars fulfilled this slot.
- SL Lge-8Sec-Buff -- From NH 189 at NY.
- Randall indicates that service was protected by JENNINGS (12-1), KEYSTONE BANKS (12-2-3), ELM LAWN (12-2-3), and PAUL REVERE (12-1), all PRR-owned.
April 1954 - Per Randall, service was protected by JENNINGS (12-1), KEYSTONE BANKS (12-2-3), ELM LAWN (12-2-3), and PAUL REVERE (12-1), all PRR-owned.
September 1954 - Per PRR Makeup of Trains, the cars remained on train 61, with one car removed as follows:
- SL 14Rmt-4DBR LW -- From NH 189 at NY. These would have been NH cars as the PRR did not have any 14-4 cars. Randall indicates only ALLYNS POINT, BEAVER TAIL POINT, BLACK POINT and CITY POINT listed as “equipped with train line for PA system” through at least 1955.
- SL 12-1 -- From NH 189 at NY.
April 1955 - Per PRR Makeup of Trains, still on train 61, the makeup was as follows:
- SL 14Rmt-4DBR LW -- Pullman project indicates plan 4159 aluminum fluting with green panels. From NH 189 at NY. Randall indicates protection by ROTON POINT and SANDY POINT.
- SL 8Sec-1DR-3DBR -- Pullman Project indicates BELL TOWER had been sold to PRR. From NH 189 at NY. Randall indicates protection by BOK TOWER and BRESLIN TOWER and ELM BROOKS and KEYSTONE BANKS from PRR. Randall further indicates that BOK TOWER, BRESLIN TOWER and VICTORIA TOWER were all in the gray “pool” scheme by the mid-‘50s.
October 1955:
- SL 14Rmt-4DBR LW -- Randall indicates service was protected by ROTON POINT and SANDY POINT. Actual consist report (CT220) shows NORTH POINT on 12/11/55.
- SL 8Sec-1DR-3DBR -- Randall indicates service was protected by BRESLIN TOWER and VICTORIA TOWER (replacing BOK TOWER), and PRR BELL TOWER. Actual consist report (CT220) shows BELL TOWER on 12/11/55.
1956:
- SL 14Rmt-4DBR LW -- No change per Randall. Actual consist report (CT220) shows LOOKOUT POINT on 7/20/56.
- Unknown second car type.
April 1957:
- SL 14Rmt-4DBR -- Actual consist report (CT220) shows LONG POINT on 1/2/1957.
- SL Lge-6DBR-Bar -- Unknown which railroad provided the car.
