The James E. Strates Shows

By the 1920’s the Warren Tank Car Company of Warren, Pennsylvania, and the Mt. Vernon Car Manufacturing Company of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, were the principle providers of the steel circus flat cars.  In 1926, both these companies were competing heavily to get circuses to convert from the 60 foot cars to their new 70 and 72 foot flats.

The 70 foot Mount Vernon flat cars can be distinguished by the pot belly sides with  ribs. The 72 foot Warren flat car had no ribs and gently arcing sides on both top and bottom. In the image at right, a Warren flat is in the foreground and the next flat is a Mount Vernon.

The JES acquired numerous truss-rod heavyweight passenger cars in 1948 from the Ringling Brothers. [Smith]

In 1967, modern 85' flats started replacing older Warren and Mt. Vernon flats. [p61, Goldsack] This effort was completed in 1971. [p68, Goldsack] As of 1972 there were (38) 85' piggy-back flats and one Warren flat used as the loading car.

The light weight era started in 1968 with the arrival of two Rock Island baggage cars built by Budd. The two Elephant cars were retired and donated to the Circus World Museum.  [Smith] As lightweight passenger cars replaced heavyweight cars, the same road number was typlically assigned.

In June 1972, while in Wilkes-Barre, the entire train was flooded by Hurricane Agnes.

In 1972, while in Elmira, the JES acquired six Pullmans and a dining car from the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad, to replace cars damaged in the preceding flood. [p.70, Goldsack]

In 1983, JES acquired ten cars, including five of the original Auto-Train bi-level automobile carriers, an original Auto-Train caboose, and four piggyback flats. The plan was to convert the auto carriers into sleeping quarters, but that never materialized and the cars were scrapped. [p.79, Goldsack]

In 1987, JES acquired seven coaches and a baggage car from the defunct Royal American Shows and replaced cars acquired from Erie-Lackawanna in 1972. The baggage car was refitted as a generator car. [p. 84, Goldsack]

The JESX reporting mark was not in use until 2003 [Smith].

Dates in parenthesis indicate dates of known photos, for differentiating eras of cars with identical road numbers or where dates on/off roster are not known. Two main sources are http://www.rrpicturearchives.net and http://passcarphotos.rypn.org.

The IHC cars produced in JES are inaccurate as they represent Pullman 12-1 and 8-1-2 plans.

For now, this is a continual work in progress. The JES tended to rename their coaches every year to correspond with the shows on their schedule. Sometimes the same name would move from one physical car to another.

Corrections and additions are welcome, with references, please. Thank you.

STRATESVILLE (1957 [Goldsack], 1966)
<no name> (1967) [Smith]

The history of this car dates back to the 1880's when it was named the "Sinco" and owned by oilman Harry Sinclair of the Sinclair Oil Company. The interior featured a mahogany paneled dining & sitting room, four sleeping compartments and a lounge for entertaining. Strates bought the car in 1936 and it served as a family living quarters, an office and an entertainment center for visiting fair officials, businessmen and celebrities along the route. The car was retired in the early 1970s following water damage occurred during Hurricane Agnes and was replace by our current office car, JESX #21, a former Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad business car. The more modern JESX #21 is currently preserved at our Winter Quarters in Orlando. (Strates Shows]

Named Elizabeth for his daughter, the car had five staterooms, an observation room, butler’s pantry, and bathroom with shower. [Trains]

Ex-Pullman PALM LANE, built 1929, plan 3975C; 3975H (10/18/32) [1 drawing room, 3 compartments, buffet, lounge, sunroom]. EM air conditioning added in 1934. Painted for Seaboard Air Line in 1951. Sold to JES 8/23/1956. [Pullman Project]

Built in 1929 by Pullman in Lot #6217 to Plan #3975C as the PALM LANE, a 3C-1DR sleeper-buffet lounge solarium observation, 1 of 8 such cars built in that Lot. 4 of these cars were built for the DIXIE FLYER with DIXIE-series names and delivered in late December 1928. The other 4 cars were built for the SEMINOLE LIMITED with PALM-series names and delivered in January 1929. One car, the PALM CITY, was wrecked in January 1947 at Perham, MN, on the NP. At the 12/31/1948 divestiture, 6 of these cars were sold to the PRR in the #854x-series. The PALM LANE was retained by Pullman until sold in August 1956 to James E. Strates Shows as the #2 SYRACUSE (1st). Strates later retired the car, and it went to the Central New York Chapter NRHS. In January 2013, the Chapter leased the SYRACUSE to Iowa Pacific on a long-term basis, and in return, IP is leasing a D&RGW business car to the Chapter, which has been put on display in place of the SYRACUSE. (RRPictureArchives.net]

Donated to CNY NRHS in 1972 after car was in a flood in Wilkes-Barre, PA. In 2012, the car was leased to Iowa Pacific Corp. Offered for sale on Ozark Mountain Railcar on 11/17/21. (web)

RALEIGH (1957 scheme [Mike Kopischke], 1966, 1967)
HAMBURG (1970)

Plan 2540 [7 compartments, buffet, lounge, open platform]; Smith] Either CONNEAUT or PAINESVILLE listed below.

Nine plan 2540 cars were built to this plan in 1911. Pullman photo 13608, which can be found in Arthur D. Dubin’s Some Classic Trains, illustrates a representative car, PAINESVILLE. A significant feature was that the door from the lounge to the rear platform was offset to the left side, not in the center of the car. The car held 8 compartments and a lounge, but no buffet. See William Foster’s 1923 calendar painting “As the Centuries Pass in the Night” for an illustration. [Passenger Car List]

Four of eight surviving cars were rebuilt to plan 2540D in 1937, with an enclosed vestibule replacing the open platform, a pediment rear end, type UC brake systems and air conditioning. Pullman photos 40892 and 40893, available from Bob’s Photos, illustrate this. The door from the lounge to the vestibule was moved to the center. The accommodations were not changed at this time. [Passenger Car List]

Four cars, including CONNEAUT, GENEVA and PAINESVILLE, were modified to plan 2540F, also in 1938, with a buffet replacing the last compartment, but no change in external appearance, particularly window arrangement. They were assigned to the Atlantic Coast Line. This included CONNEAUT. [Passenger Car List]

In 1945, the CONNEAUT carried Franklin D. Roosevelt's body from Warm Springs, Ga.

Due to a lack of data on acquisitions, I cannot specifically link the following cars which went to JES with the corresponding JES road number. At some point, hopefully the connections will be possible.

Strates two toneThough I have no photo evidence of which car names mapped to which car numbers in 1957, the adjoining article provides the full list of car names as follows: Raleigh, Syracuse, York, Hamburg, Shelby, Florence, Clearfield, Charleston, Charlotte, Danville, Elmira, Corning, and Binghamton. Stratesville, already known as car #1, was also on the train. [Passenger Car List]

I have identified the CHARLESTON car as #11, and the CORNING car as #13, which burned in 1957.

  1956 - 1972 Passenger Car

Ex-Pullman CONNEAUT, New York Central. Built 1911, plan 2540; 2540C (11/12/24); 2540D (8/19/37); 2540F (11/30/38); 2540G (7/7/41); 2540H (2/18/43); 2540G (8/30/45); 2540F (9/28/46) [7 compartments, buffet, lounge, open platform]. Built for use on the New York Central in 20th Century Limited service. Ice air conditioning added in 1937. Displaced in 1938 and had regular assignment on the Atlantic Coast Line through 1953. Often served on POTUS trains directly ahead of the MAGELLAN and had carried the coffin on the FDR funeral train in 1945. Rode on 242A trucks. Sold to JES 8/23/1956. [Pullman Project]

In 1941 CONNEAUT was removed from ACL assignment and modified for use in presidential travel, normally just ahead of the armored presidential car FERDINAND MAGELLAN. The buffet was removed and the eighth compartment was reinstalled (plan 2540G). Subsequently a secretary’s room was carved out of the lounge (plan 2540H).

--In 1945 CONNEAUT carried President Roosevelt’s body from Warm Springs, Georgia, where he died, to Washington D.C. for his funeral and thence to Hyde Park for interment. The wide lounge windows permitted mourners to view the casket as the train passed, and facilitated loading and unloading it at the ends of each leg of the journey. Photos of this event can be obtained by Google searches such as “FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT funeral train”.

--In 1946 CONNEAUT was returned to plan 2540F and to ACL assignment. [Passenger Car List]

Destroyed by in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., by Hurricane Agnes in 1972.
